A licence for medicinal cannabis has been granted for the treatment of chronic pain for the first time in Ireland. The move has been described by the medical profession as an “important development”. New research has confirmed that cannabinoids – the active chemicals in cannabis – are effective in killing leukaemia cells, particularly when used in combination with chemotherapy treatments. Researchers also found that sequential use of an initial dose of chemotherapy first and then cannabinoids significantly improved overall results against the blood cancer cells. They found that combining existing chemotherapy treatments with cannabinoids had better results than chemotherapy alone, meaning that a similar level of effect could be achieved through using a lower dose of the chemotherapy. A non-psychoactive compound found in cannabis called cannabidiol (CBD) is to be tested for its effects on paediatric brain cancer cells by experts at Nottingham’s world-leading Children’s Brain Tumour Research Centre. In this its 20th anniversary year, the Centre needs to raise at least £100,000 to fund the new project and has just received generous kick-starts of £45,000 from Astro Brain Tumour Fund and £10,000 from the Jessica Hope Foundation.
