Nowadays there is willingness for mainstream media to engage the debate about what should be done with international drug policy. Even the BBC is keen to present a balanced debate, inviting reformed celebrity drug ‘addicts’, self-confessed ‘medical’ users of cannabis and self-professed experts to discuss how prohibition created a paradox of consequences of harms across the globe. From Glasgow estate junkies using heroin contaminated with anthrax, to the killing fields of Mexico’s turf wars over the cocaine trade, it’s now acceptable to argue to de-criminalise, regulate or legalise so-called illicit drugs. I say ‘so-called’ because all these expressions such as…

Jacob Sullum shares this incredible story from a defense attorney in Kansas. I had a jury trial this morning on level 3 possession with intent MJ, level 4 possession drug paraphernalia and level 10 no drug tax stamp. During voir dire, my almost all white, middle-class, middle-aged jury went into full rebellion against the prosecutor stating that they wouldn’t convict even if the client’s guilt was proven beyond a reasonable doubt — almost all of them! They felt marijuana should be legalized, what he does with it is his own business and that the jails are already full of people…

A team of scientists from Ventspils Dumas in Latvia have begun to experiment growing low-grade cannabis for fibre and other beneficial plant biomass products, which they hope will lower the cost of heating. Ventspils is the first area in the country trying to grow the plant as alternative energy source. Project team leader, Kristina Grinberga said: “The key is to find out whether it will be possible to use [hemp] as alternative energy, to explore the conditions under which they can grow, what soil is best”. Experimental plantations were embedded in different soils to assess the quality of the plant…

The oral administration of cannabis extracts significantly reduces muscle stiffness in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), according to just published clinical trial data published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry. Investigators at the University of Plymouth, Clinical Neurology Research Group, in the United Kingdom assessed the use of cannabinoids versus placebo in 279 subjects with MS over a twelve-week period. Cannabis extracts in the study contained standardized doses of THC and cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychoactive constituent in cannabis, contained in a soft, gelatin capsule. Investigators reported that oral cannabis extracts were “superior” over placebo in the treatment of…

From the start of 2013, those caught with small amounts of narcotic drugs for personal use in Croatia will no longer face criminal conviction. The criminal offence will be degraded to a minor offence. The new law is aimed at decriminalising possession of small amounts of drugs for personal use, but not its production, writes daily newspaper Jutarnji list. In other words, growing just a few plants of Indian hemp for personal health needs remains a criminal offence, and those growing it still will risk facing a fine and up to three years in prison. A working group from the…

While cognitive performance is negatively affected by cannabis use, the negative effects appear to completely wear off within a month, according to research published in the Experimental and Clinical Psychopharmacology in late June. “With the number of cannabis users both illicitly and licitly increasing, the question of any potential lasting impact from cannabis use is increasingly important,” Amy M. Schreiner and Michael E. Dunn of the University of Central Florida wrote in their study. Numerous studies have found that cannabis use affects memory, attention, perceptual-motor tasks, and other cognitive processes, but studies on how long these effects last has been…

‘Do you have everything you need? Do you want every thing you need?’ Ambiguous, eh? Even more so when you hear it from a former drug smuggler, and I’m talking big game! That is how Howard Marks greeted us at the opening of the show in Lavery’s last Monday evening. Shame, but he did not go back to his old ways and did not offer us any high-quality Afghan hash. Nevertheless, he and his friend John Sinclair gave us a very good performance that night. Howard is widely known and famous within the circles of dope smokers in the UK,…
