A new study published in the British Journal of Pharmacology has found that cannabis may treat neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease. “In an increasingly ageing population, the incidence of neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and Huntington’s disease are rising”, according to the study. “While the aetiologies of these disorders are different, a number of common mechanisms that underlie their neurodegenerative components have been elucidated; namely neuroinflammation, excitotoxicity, mitochondrial dysfunction and reduced trophic support. Current therapies focus on treatment of the symptoms and attempt to delay the progression of these diseases but there is currently no cure.”…

A new study published last month in the Journal of Psychoactive Drugs has found that cannabis use can greatly decrease the negative impacts of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). For the study, researchers used the Clinician Administered Posttraumatic Scale to determine symptom scores of 80 individuals with PTSD before and after they began using cannabis. According to the data garnered from the study, cannabis was found to reduce a person’s symptom score by an average of 75%. “Cannabis is associated with reductions in PTSD symptoms in some patients, and prospective, placebo-controlled study is needed to determine efficacy of cannabis and…
May 2nd – A proposal to allow those with past cannabis convictions to have them sealed from their record – meaning they wouldn’t appear in background checks – was approved with a 3 to 2 vote by Colorado’s Senate Judiciary Committee. The proposal, Senate Bill 218, would allow anyone with a past cannabis conviction that’s now legal under Amendment 64 (the possession of up to an ounce) to have it sealed from their record, even if the conviction occurred years before the state voted to legalize cannabis. The proposal is now headed to the Senate Appropriations Committee. Although the proposal…
One compelling argument for the legalization of medical marijuana is its ability to ameliorate intense pain. Currently available technologies have helped us gain understanding of cannabis, as well as its more-commonly-accepted opioid counterparts, and the affects they have on pain. In 2010, as an attempt to gain insight on pain’s function in the brain, Oxford University conducted a study using fMRI machines and the standard tricks of psychology. Volunteers were monitored during zaps of pain to their feet. Some areas, they were told, had the potential to be unsafe. In those spots, the volunteers reported their pain levels as being…
Montevideo (AFP) – Uruguay has set the price for pot at less than a dollar a gram, as it lays out rules for the government-regulated sale of marijuana in a daring, closely watched social experiment. The small South American country is following up on its ground-breaking decision in December to legalize the production and sale of marijuana under government control, an international first amid growing sentiment that the war on drugs has failed. On Friday, the government announced rules for the new market, setting limits on amounts individuals can buy, the potency of the drug and the price. It also…
CBD, short for cannabidiol, is one of the major cannabinoids found with marijuana. It is found in fairly high concentrations, only second to THC, the more commonly known cannabinoid. However, unlike THC, CBD is not psychedelic, and is even thought to temper and restrict the potency of THC. Other than its lack of psychedelic effects, science is also showing that CBD has a huge potential for medical application. CBD oil is concentrated extract made from marijuana that has been bred to have a high CBD content and a low THC content. This allows the resulting oil to contain potent medicinal…
At the end of 2013, Uruguay became the first country in the world to fully legalise marijuana. VICE correspondent Krishna Andavolu heads over to Uruguay to check out how the country is adjusting to a legally regulated marijuana market. Along the way, he meets up with Uruguay’s president, José Mujica, to burn one down and talk about the president’s goal of a chicken in every pot, a car in every garage and six cannabis plants per household. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1BwVxmJPies

Journeying across the North American landscape, “The Culture High” is the riveting story that tears into the very fibre of modern day marijuana prohibition to reveal the truth behind the arguments and motives governing both those who support and those who oppose the existing pot laws. With budgets to fight the war reaching billions and arrests for simple possession skyrocketing to nearly a million annually, the debate over marijuana’s legality has reached epic proportions. Utilizing the quirky yet profound nature of its predecessor, “”The Union: The Business Behind Getting High””, “The Culture High” raises the stakes with some of today’s…
April 9, 2014 | What do breast milk, tea and a cannabis cigarette have in common? As mind-boggling as it may seem, quite a bit. In addition to providing a soothing sense of comfort and bliss, they also facilitate in stimulating and nourishing the endocannabinoid system, which plays a significant role in a variety of physiological processes. Cannabinoids are naturally occurring chemical compounds that promote homeostasis by interacting with specific receptors found in the human body. Thus far, two receptors have been determined – CB1 and CB2. This intricate system of cannabinoids, receptors and other binding substances manufactured in the…
